Indoor gardening aquaponics

Are you interested in growing organic food?

Many gardeners who practice traditional gardening or who want to garden but do not have enough land have turned to aquaponic gardening or farming. This cultivation method allows the production of fruits, vegetables and fish. Both horizontal and vertical growth can be achieved.

Beginners often start their first project at home. Do you have a stocked aquarium or want to do more with your current fish tank? People enjoy the living art and decoration that this system introduces into their homes. The beauty of the goldfish and greenery adds nature to the interior while growing food. If there is no interest in growing food, many flowering plants can be considered.

Many gardeners enjoy traditional gardening. Some people like to use both methods.

Traditional aquaponics versus aquaponics:

  1. Land vs water

  2. Big space vs small space

  3. Seasonal vs all year

  4. Gardening tools vs. some tools

  5. Seeds or plants are used in both systems.

  6. Fertilizers vs organic fish waste

  7. Pesticides, herbicides, insecticides vs none required for interiors

  8. Maintenance hours vs one hour a day

  9. Manpower vs automatic operating equipment

  10. Natural weather conditions versus controlled indoor environment

  11. Eating farm produce vs. eating farm produce and fish

Growing plants with water and fish is much easier. This is a more enjoyable way to source organic vegetables and fresh, home-raised fish with minimal effort and cost.

Fish has become very expensive in grocery stores. If you like to eat fish, this becomes more affordable than buying from your local store.

Why do home gardeners and commercial farmers use this method of farming or fish or the combination of crops and fish?

  1. Requires less water than traditional agriculture

  2. No wastewater is produced

  3. No soil erosion conditions

  4. No requirement for aggressive insecticides

  5. Toxin-free fish

This type of farming along with fish farming has been done for thousands of years. Home growers have made great strides, and the most ambitious gardeners are using abandoned buildings, such as warehouses, to build a commercial business. Once again, a hobby has turned into an entrepreneurial career.

How is this gardening achieved?

  1. Select ornamental or edible fish.

  2. A floating platform of containers with a plant or seed is placed above the water.

  3. The roots are attracted to their nutritional needs with fish waste.

  4. The fish are placed under the plants.

  5. Feed your fish as their waste matter is the essential fertilizer for plants.

  6. Plant roots keep the tank clean.

Goldfish are popular in the home because of their beautiful color. Edible fish will grow larger and larger when they reach the right size for the plate; go fishing by removing them from the tank.

There is your full meal of fresh produce and meat. No license is required for this type of fishing.
