How to reset the BIOS password on your own

If you ever come up with a time when you are asked to enter a BIOS password when starting your computer, there are a few methods on how to reset the BIOS password without too much effort. In the event that you are well versed in the operation of your computer and its system, you can write an application to track the password. Alternatively, there are some utility software options that can be run on your computer to reset the BIOS password. Some of these utilities depend on the type of BIOS, while others run on all motherboard brands. Either they reset just the password or they reset the BIOS itself, thereby changing all the settings to the default and clearing the password.

Assuming the computer gods aren’t smiling at you and the password recovery exercise through software doesn’t work, you can make a similar attempt using hardware. It is imperative that you have enough knowledge about computer hardware before you have a go with this method. First you need to open your computer. If this is already too overwhelming for you, it is recommended that you seek the advice of an expert before proceeding. Since the BIOS password is stored in CMOS memory when the computer is turned off, removing the CMOS battery effectively erases all information, including the password. At power up, enter the correct CMOS setting details to use the computer. One possible challenge that may arise is a battery soldered to the motherboard. As such, look for a bridge to clear the password. See your motherboard documentation for more details on its location. Alternatively, make a short at both points where the battery connects to the motherboard. Be very careful when doing this, as you don’t want to unnecessarily mess up your motherboard. Note that removing the CMOS battery may not work for resetting BIOS passwords on some laptops. You may need to take your machine to a service center.

If the method with removing the CMOS battery doesn’t work, find the real-time clock on your motherboard and reset it. Depending on whether this clock is externally or internally powered, a simple task of removing it from its socket and replacing it is enough to reset the BIOS password. If not, you may need to shorten some pins for a few seconds.

An alternative method on how to reset the BIOS password is to follow the solutions established by the computer vendors. Depending on the brand of your computer, each method varies accordingly.

Depending on the type of BIOS on your computer, there is an open secret to backdoor passwords. These passwords are used by the respective BIOS manufacturers to enter the system regardless of the password defined by the user. Normally intended for testing and maintenance purposes, they are not supposed to be misused or abused.
