Have Yorkshire Terrier Puppies Dipped in Popularity?

The American Kennel Club has released its list of the most popular dogs of 2009. It may come as no surprise that the Labrador Retriever is at the top of the list for the 19th year in a row. What may surprise us Yorkie puppy lovers is that the Yorkshire Terrier has been displaced to the number 3 spot by the German Shepherd.

Before all of us toy breed lovers get mad, there’s some good news. Yorkshire Terrier puppies are the most popular breed in the toy group, not an easy feat to top there! For at least the last 3 years, Yorkies have been ranked second, giving them the title of second most popular dog for quite some time. So what happened in 2009, people?

The AKC gets its numbers from the number of dogs of a specific breed that are registered through its organization. Perhaps some of us New Yorkie puppy owners haven’t registered our pup yet? Really, that’s not a big deal. But if you’re a competitive person and want to see your favorite furry breed return to duty, fill out those papers and submit!

On another note, the top ten dogs were split squarely in the middle between large breeds and toy breeds, which seems to say that our little pups are in competition with the big ones!

As lovers of Yorkshire Terrier puppies, we are simply not going to believe that one of our favorite breeds has lost popularity. We are sure that there is a reasonable explanation and a plan for 2010 to be a successful year for this little breed!
