Can you win the lottery more than once? Lottery winner statistics

Winning the lottery would be a dream come true, right? Winning that jackpot would be amazing. You could do whatever you want, whenever you want. You could buy all the biggest things: big houses, yachts, fancy clothes, fancy cars, all the latest gadgets. But of course winning the lottery is hard. After all, the odds are bad, and statistically, it probably won’t happen. Why then do some people win more than once? If other people can do it, why can’t you win the lottery more than once?

Let’s first look at some statistics on lottery winners. Take one of the most popular lottery formats in the world: Lotto 649. To win a 649 lottery, you must match six numbers, out of forty-nine possible. The odds of doing so are about 1 in 14 million. That means you have to buy seven million tickets to have only a 50% chance of winning. That is simply not possible. But some people win. Because? Everything is based on the law of statistics called Law of the big numbers – Get enough people to play and some of them will be lucky to win.

Now, some of those people who end up winning the lottery will end up spending a lot more money on lottery tickets because after they win a lot of money, they’ll be able to afford it. So, for example, instead of buying one ticket per drawing, as they might have done before hitting the jackpot, they could buy fifty tickets per drawing. Buying many more tickets will greatly improve people’s chances of winning the lottery and therefore we sometimes see people win more than once. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should spend more money than you can afford just because it increases your chances of winning.

There are documented stories of people who actually won the lottery more than once. For example, a man named Erik Martineau won $20,000 on a Connecticut lottery instant ticket; Less than a month later, he won another Scratch-Off ticket, this time $1 million. In another example, a Canadian man won $340,000 from Lotto 649 in April 2007; in November of the same year, he won a $15 million Lotto 649 jackpot. No one knows for sure, but it’s very likely that these two lottery winners spent more on tickets after his first big win.

So can you win the lottery more than once? As I explained, winning the lottery the first time is highly unlikely. But if you’re lucky and win, you might win again soon after.
