Buy private license plates – 7 ideas to help you choose

If you’d like to purchase a custom license plate, we have a few ideas to get you started.

1. License plates with names.

Of course, by far the first choice for a private license plate is a person’s first name. But, as names like Paul, David, Susan, Angela are very common, the demand for these is high. And the consequence is that the cost of these registration numbers increases, putting them out of reach for most of us.

2. Abbreviated license plates

Many have turned to shortened 3-letter versions of names as an alternative: such as MEG, GAV, SUE, and ANG. While these are significantly more affordable than a full name, their price is rising rapidly as the popularity of personalized registration numbers grows. Undated license plates are naturally expensive, and even more so if the letters form an abbreviated name. However, even prefix registration numbers are increasing in price as the last good ones are sold out. There is a general preference for prefix registrations over current style registration numbers (introduced in 2001).

Initials are the next best option. Keep in mind that some initials are more common than others, so your choice may be somewhat limited. And where the demand is high, the price is also higher.

4. Records of jobs and hobbies

Work (or sometimes hobby) related registration numbers are often the next option. 3-letter words like PUB, LAW, and TXI are still very affordable as there are many registration numbers available with these letters. There are longer words available on the market, but be prepared to pay more for them.

5. Automobile-Related Records

Many opt for a registration number that reflects the specific car they drive. For example, registration number N11 BMW. The downside here is that registration means little when you’re not in the proper vehicle. Therefore, the owner may find himself selling the registration number when he changes cars.

More generic car-related words give a bit more flexibility. Like MPH, NOS (for the running guys among you), TOY, or V12, these are just a few options.

6. Popular words

Words like BOY, HOT, BABY, and KISS are popular, of course.

7. A little more creativity

There are plenty of other license plate and word themes to play around with. The important thing is to make sure that the registration number you choose suits your personality (or that of the person you’re giving it to!).
