A green card attorney can help you understand which green card application is right for you

A green card attorney is the oracle of our country’s laws regarding legal residency in the United States of America. We all know how the world wants to come to America for a better life. One of the most popular ways is through a green card visa application.

“So what exactly is a green card?” you might ask. It is a legal document that allows a foreigner to live and work in the US permanently, albeit under certain conditions. There are many ways to obtain a green card, and each of these routes has its own unique processes and documentation. It is left to the person to decide which of these routes is the most suitable. That can be a daunting task considering all the processes involved. Ironically, many of these routes are further subdivided into even smaller classes with their own requirements.

Pretty confusing for the normal guy who just wants a visa, right? But it’s not confusing for the right lawyer.

That is why getting a lawyer is very important. Here is a list of some of the ways to get a visa:

• Issued for family ties.

• Through a job offer or employment

• Through the search for refugee or asylum status

Those are the most common ways. There are others that are more restricted to particular groups of people. Some examples are:

• US child of a US citizen

• member of the armed forces

• American Indian born in Canada

• Haitian refugees

That’s just to name a few; the list of special cases and circumstances continues.

The knowledge and experience that a lawyer would give you would save you a lot of hassle.

Imagine having to go through all the shades of paperwork involved. Having to decide what type of application you are eligible for. Then decide which one would have the best chance of getting your card. The whole process is certainly not very exciting for anyone, but it is something a green card lawyer would do for you. An attorney would carefully review the details of each law and consider each individual case. In this way, the probability of submitting a successful application is much higher.

A green card lawyer will continue to be of great help to you, even after you have finished your application process and received your visa. It is not uncommon for green cards to be withdrawn, usually in the event the holder commits a crime; even one that would not normally be considered serious.

There are also cases of cardholders being denied re-entry into the US after being gone for more than a specified amount of time when they received the card. If you obtained a green card between the ages of 18 and 26 and did not register for selective service, you could be criminally prosecuted and eventually deported. There are so many other rules that guide card issuance and processing besides the few I’ve mentioned. Your immigration attorney will give you more information on what to do to maintain the legal status of your green card.

A competent lawyer can also help in other circumstances. They work directly with relevant government agencies such as the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and USCIS to help you change your immigration status if you are already in the US on a non-permanent visa.
