Ways to test the quality of deionized water

There are different types of pure water, but two of the most popular commercially are distilled and deionized water. They are generally the same in that they both contain no ions or minerals and are essentially just water. However, maintaining their quality depends on how buyers store them.

Many people do not understand what deionized or deionized water is and often compare it to other bottled waters in grocery stores. But this type of liquid is not like the typical commercial that is sold in stores. You can usually find bottled distilled water that is sold commercially and they are the alternative. Deionized water is also called demineralized water and the term suggests that it is different from bottled mineral water.

Demineralized water is the purest form available on the market. Water companies purify it to the point that it deionizes. Many companies use this type of water in manufacturing and maintenance. For example, cleaning the equipment may require the use of pure water during the final rinse. Chemical laboratories also use the same in cleaning glassware because the use of running water produces flakes and stains.

Ion removal is a difficult, equipment-dependent process called resin beds. In a sophisticated deionization process, the water passes through two resin beds, one to remove the positive ions (Ca ++, Mg ++, Fe +++, and K +) and the next to remove the negative ions ( Cl-, sulfates and carbonates). ). Of course, not all the ions are removed, but almost all the ions are lost after the process. The process, therefore, results in the purest form of water on the planet.

The best way to check water quality is to conduct conductivity and resistivity tests. These two tests provide data on how the water sample conducts and resists electricity. Since ions are electrical conductors, their presence in the liquid raises conductivity levels. That is, if you pass electricity in running water, it can conduct electricity. Pure water itself is a non-conductive covalent substance.

Therefore, the lower the conductivity, the lower the ionic content of the liquid. The highest quality DI water provides the lowest conductivity readings. Consequently, it should give high resistivity readings. Conductivity and resistivity are generally used to test the quality of DI water. But these tests cannot determine the presence of organic substances.

Deionization of water only removes charged particles and does not remove organic solutes that are not charged. Some people think that this inability of the process to remove impurities other than ions makes it ineffective. However, deionization is not a process used for raw water. Companies use raw water with various filtration methods to remove sediment, organics and microorganisms before passing it through ion exchange resin beds.

Different manufacturers buy deionized water in bulk to save shipping or transportation costs. Many owners also do the same.
