Volkswagen’s engineering team has brought an innovative concept to life with its TSI technology. A supercharger works in the lower rev ranges, while a turbocharger works in higher revs. The combination of these two creates a generous amount of power of 125kW/170hp, constant torque band of 240Nm from 1,500rpm to 4,750rpm and low fuel consumption of 7.6 litres/100km.
The technical basis of the Twincharger technology is provided by a 1,390 cc four-cylinder engine that produces the dynamics of a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine. The TSI offers maximum torque from just 1,500 rpm. It can reach 100 km/h in a matter of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 212 km/h.
TSI technology lives up to Volkswagen’s motto which is “maximum power-minimum consumption”. This technology is available on the Touran with a 103kW engine, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Golf Plus and Volkswagen Jetta. The 125kW Twincharger has also been added to the top of the Volkswagen Touran range.
Volkswagen has already received three awards for its TSI engine internationally. The first award received by the car manufacturer was in autumn 2005, the What’s New award from the American magazine “Popular Science”. The second came in the spring of 2006 when VW received the Paul Pietsch Award in Germany. And the third prize went to VW in the UK, where the Twincharger was honored by the “International Engine of the Year” committee jury in 2006 by winning the “1.0-1.4 liter” category. The TSI was also voted “Best New Engine of 2006”.
