Three tips for more authoritative copywriting

If you’ve found that your copywriting isn’t performing as well as you’d like, then perhaps you need to change the tone of your writing. Writing your copy from a more authoritative tone will make your recommendations and suggestions more powerful. To that end, we’re going to look at some of the things you can do to add that kind of tone to your writing.

Tip #1 – Clearly state the benefits and advantages

Since it is probably an obvious statement to say that nothing can be everything to everyone, we are sure that your idea, statement, service or product will have some limitations or drawbacks. Your job is not to detail this to your readers. Rather accentuate the positive. Make sure your writing is focused on the benefits and perks they will receive.

For example, if you’re promoting a moped, you don’t have to tell your readers that it won’t go as fast as a car. In fact, it will not fly either, but it will help the owner to reach his destination. It costs less than a car, is environmentally friendly and easy to store.

Tip #2 – Make use of the facts

It may be in your nature to write in a hyperbole nature, but this does not endear the reader. In fact, it means that what you say will be overlooked because of your liberal use of embellishment. Of course, this is not the desired mindset that you want them to have on your behalf. You’ll find, if you haven’t already, that the quickest way to reduce your credibility is to be known as an exaggerator. But you can use this same principle on your behalf. Let your readers see you as the one establishing easily verifiable facts in your writing. Take advantage of these to make any points, suggestions, or recommendations you’d like to make.

Tip #3: Support your claims with evidence

You’ll find that gaining a tone of authority in writing is much the same as what happens with the news. Before making statements, they need proof that what they say is true. You should look to do the same with your writing. When you make a claim that needs to be proven, so to speak, make sure you also have the figures and details to back it up. You can even go as far as using a statement, research, or study by a recognized expert to add to your claim if available.

We’ve taken a quick look at three tips you can use to make your writing more authoritative. These included the statement of benefits and advantages, the use of facts, and supporting claims with evidence. By making sure your writing incorporates these elements, you can easily add a more authoritative tone to it.
