Is A Real Estate Career Right For You?

Do you want a career in real estate, but do not know if it is for you? There are many things to consider before starting your new career, so do your homework to make sure this is the job for you. These are some of the most important factors to help you in your decision.

I will receive my first commission check in a month

Many people view a career in real estate as any easy job that doesn’t require a lot of work and pays very well. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to the amount of work an agent does; money, on the other hand, can be great! One thing to keep in mind is that this is not an industry where you just jump in and start seeing results immediately; it takes time to build a clientele and generate income. If you follow the right business model and are consistent in your efforts, you will see the same results as top agents across the country. Keep in mind that it takes the average new agent about six months to see a commission, and unless you have to pay a lot with your first client, the check is probably not something to write home to Mom. Having a reserve of money saved is ideal; enough to allow you up to six months of living expenses.

I’m only going to sell real estate part time

Another misconception about the real estate industry is that of a part-time agent; Can you make it in the industry with just a part-time effort? It’s not impossible, but don’t count on it. If you are really looking to make this your career, you should spend 100% of your time on your business. If you have a full-time, 8-5, MF job, how do you expect to provide quality customer service to your clients, let alone find people interested in using you as an agent? Your real estate job isn’t just showing houses and cashing commission checks; Most of your time will be spent looking for clients. Lead generation is the most important part of your business, and if you can’t make the time for this, this is definitely not the career for you.

I will choose the broker with the best commission division

XYZ Realty offers a 100% commission split, so it has to be the best place to hang your license, right? Wrong! 100% of zero is still zero. Just because you went to school for six weeks and got your real estate license doesn’t mean you know how to run a business. The reason more than 80% of first-year agents fail is because they choose the broker who does nothing to help them succeed. Don’t trust a company that just throws you to the wolves or tells you to follow your best agent to learn how to sell. You need to find a broker that gives you the tools to run a business the right way. Training, education, support, and a proven business model that works in all economies are key in the decision process when choosing a real estate broker.

If you’ve gotten this far without freaking out, a career in real estate might be the ideal fit for you. What it really comes down to is consistency, education, and time. If you are consistent in your lead generation efforts, follow a proven business model that works in any market, and can endure as long as you build customers, you will definitely have a future in this industry. Good luck deciding if this is the right career for you.
